Wax Candies: A Sweet and Surprising Use for Our Australian Manuka Beeswax

Have you heard about wax candies? Neither had we until recently!

A lot passes us by when our heads are in the hives out in the bush, but thankfully our beeswax customers who are mostly balm and candle makers, crafters, creators and artisans keep us up to date.

So yes, craftspeople make all sorts of things with our beeswax, but it’s the first time we’ve heard of it being used for what are basically sweet syrups contained in fun-shaped beeswax lollies… or candies as they say in the US.

You can buy our bees' manuka beeswax and beeswax from our other honey harvests here.

Wax Candies? In Australia?

While wax candies were a big deal in early 1900s America, Australians mostly missed the trend. Now, thanks to TikTok nostalgia and ASMR (that's an enjoyable sensation from listenig to certain sounds etc) a new generation of sweet tooths is discovering these playful, chewy treats.

Traditionally, wax candies were made with paraffin wax, a petroleum byproduct. But the best (and most natural) ones are made with pure beeswax and natural syrups like honey (Eucalypt harvests through to Australian manuka), maple syrup, or fruit reductions.

Why Choose Manuka Beeswax Over Paraffin?

  • All natural and sustainable – a byproduct of our bees making manuka honey is manuka beeswax. Manuka beeswax is eco-friendly and chemical-free.
  • Better mouth feel and flavour – manuka beeswax is softer than paraffin, with a honey-like, non-chemical flavour.
  • No nasties – we certainly want to be eating paraffin wax and whatever it contains and the processing agents used. We know our beeswax is pure, simple, and straight from nature.
  • Locally Sourced – You know where our beeswax and manuka honey comes from, practically right in our backyard near the beaches and forests on the Mid North Coast of Australia.

Make Your Own Beeswax Candies (that's right...candies not candles...though you can make those too with our beeswax, you'd just need a different recipe!)

If you're feeling adventurous, here’s a simple DIY recipe using our Australian beeswax:

Beeswax Candy Recipe

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup pure food-grade beeswax
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil (for softness)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract or natural flavored oil
  • Small silicone bottle molds (or fun small mold of your choice)
  • Natural syrup of choice (our honey, maple, or fruit reduction…if you wanted a more medicinal candy, you could perhaps infuse our Manuka with a herb such as rosemary)

Instructions:

  1. Melt the beeswax and coconut oil over low heat.
  2. Coat molds with melted wax to form a bottle shape. Let set, then reinforce with a second layer.
  3. Fill each bottle with your natural syrup.
  4. Seal with a thin layer of beeswax. Let cool.
  5. Bite, sip, and chew—just like the originals, but all-natural!

Where to Get Our Beeswax

We’re off to tell the bees about this latest TikTok-induced human trend using their hard work. Thanks, bees!
